Ensuring Safety in EV Charging Stations with Advanced Residual Current Sensors

Our sensors provide reliable and rapid protection for EV charging stations, ensuring compliance with global standards

Application Scenarios

Mode 2 – Portable Protection (IC-CPD)

This mode uses a cable with an integrated control and protection device. It provides basic safety functions like current monitoring and fault detection. Often used for home charging with a standard outlet, it’s safer than Mode 1 but still limited in power output.

Mode 3 – AC Charging Station

An advanced AC charging setup with built-in communication between the charger and the EV. It supports higher power levels and includes protection mechanisms. Commonly installed in homes, workplaces, and public spaces for regular daily charging.

Mode 4 – DC Fast Charging

This mode delivers high-power DC electricity directly to the vehicle’s battery, bypassing the onboard charger. It’s designed for rapid charging, making it ideal for highway stations and commercial EV fleets where speed and efficiency are critical.

Geely – Residential & Workplace AC Charging

For Geely’s mixed rollout of 7 kW home wallboxes and 11/22 kW workplace chargers, the priority is compact, standards-compliant residual-current protection that won’t cause nuisance trips. Magtron’s iFluxgate® RCMU modules provide 6 mA DC detection with integrated self-test, single-supply operation, and both analog/digital status outputs for easy PLC/MCU integration. Low offset and temperature drift maintain accuracy across single- and three-phase topologies, while harmonic immunity helps in sites with PV, V2H, or noisy grids. The small footprint frees PCB space for metering and comms, shortening enclosure depth and cutting assembly time. Pre-certification support, reference schematics, and clear wiring templates accelerate IEC 61851/62955 design reviews, so engineering teams can standardize one protection block across 7–22 kW variants, reduce SKU complexity, and speed time-to-market.

BYD – Fleet Depot with AC Posts & DC Fast Charging

Bus and last-mile fleets need high uptime across mixed AC posts (22 kW) and high-power DC cabinets. On the AC side, Magtron’s iFluxgate® RCMUs deliver precise 6 mA DC and 30 mA rms leakage detection with on-board self-test and remote diagnostics, enabling scheduled health checks without taking lanes offline. For DC cabinets, sealed high-voltage contact components (aux-contact options, arc-suppression design) provide fast fault isolation and clear state feedback to charger controllers. Unified signaling and mounting patterns simplify service training and spares across the depot, while robust thermal behavior supports outdoor cabinets from summer peaks to cold starts. The result is consistent safety behavior across architectures, quicker maintenance windows, and a scalable blueprint for expanding depots without re-engineering the protection layer each time.

Toyota – North America Level 1/2 & IC-CPD Portable Chargers

Dealer and service networks in North America commonly deploy Level 1/2 (120/240 V) wall units alongside IC-CPD portable cords. Magtron offers slim, UL-ready RCMU solutions supporting CCID20 and 6 mA DC detection, with startup and periodic self-tests that report clear pass/fail signals to the controller. Flexible output modes (voltage, open-collector) ease drop-in adoption across different control boards, and the compact form factor keeps housings small for cable-mounted or wall-mounted designs. Low standby consumption helps meet efficiency targets, while reference firmware and wiring guides reduce validation time against UL 2231 and related requirements. Standardizing on one protection block for L1/L2 and IC-CPD variants streamlines inventory, improves installation consistency across dealer locations, and supports faster, compliant rollouts at scale.
